Education and Mentoring Program
While single digit employment data from developed raise heated debates and at times bringing down
governments, double digit unemployment is chronic in Africa. Youth unemployment brings with it a
life of hopelessness and attendant vices including crime, drug abuse and moral depravity.
The situation is worse rural Africa and in its slums and inner cities. Here, access to education is
limited due to rampant poverty. School going youth are disadvantaged as often the inner city environment
is not conducive for scholarship. Reading material, reading space and the peace of concentration are
exceptional in slum areas. Further, role models with superior minds are not visible to these youth.
Haiba believes mentoring is an important component for both educational and personal life success for
these youth. Our activities in the education and mentoring program include:
- Self-improvement conferences e.g. confidence and self-worth, resumes, careers, public
speaking, networking.
- Promoting a reading culture.
- Provision of electronic and print reference library.
- Construction of seminar and tuition facilities at Kibera Academy.
- Provision and training of ICT in teaching.
- Scholarship scheme for top performers.
- Bursary scheme for poor families.
- Mentoring program for youth upper primary and high school.
