January 1, 2016, members of the Haiba Foundation were elated to participate in the Centennial Celebration for the achievements of the Nubian University Students Association (NUSO) held at the Kibra Day Academy in Nairobi. It was a joyous moment to see the confident youth, a by-product of The Foundation effectively running the show from event planning, sourcing of the chief guest Professor Yash Pal Ghai - a renowned constitutional expert and effective mcing. Appreciating their role, NUSO awarded certificates of appreciation to its alumni and then hosted all the guests to a sumptuous lunch.
The event was in a way, a Celebration of Haiba Foundation achievement. Formed 12 years ago, the Foundation purposes to break the self-perpetuating ring of poor academic performance, dropping out of school, unemployment, lost youth and social vices in Kibra. Initially this achievement looked so far-fetched. Having experienced growing up needing, and cutting out a life for themselves within the largest informal settlement in East and Central Africa, Kibra, the founders of the Foundation promoted academic excellence with the goal to increase the number of professionals amongst the marginalized Nubian Community and the Muslims in Kibra. Guided with the vision to be a top quality foundation committed to the uplifting of the lives of the inner city community of Kibra, Haiba Foundation started holding annual academic awards to reward best performing students in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCPE) national examinations, mentorship program including annual retreats for the awardees as well as community resilience programs.
Haiba Foundation considers its special relationship with NUSO as a key strategic link to reinforce gains achieved.
The Foundation membership is open to the community and welcomes any individual or corporates that would like to support academic excellence in Kibra. For further information about the foundation, membership subscription and partnership please visit our website Haiba Foundation
